Steam booster packs: how they work and are they worth it

Where booster packs come from, what is actually inside one, and why they are a poor way to target a specific game's cards.

What a booster pack is

A booster pack is three random cards from one game's set, unopened until it is used from inventory. It is not itself a card, and its game is fixed the moment it is created; opening one does not let a different game be chosen.

Where they come from

Steam occasionally grants one for free to active traders, and one can also be bought using Steam gems, the currency earned from turning unwanted cards and items into a spendable balance. Either way, getting one for a specific game is not guaranteed or fast.

Why they are not a targeting tool

Three random cards from a set of five to fifteen will rarely complete anything by themselves, and duplicates are common. Booster packs work well as a side effect of playing and trading a lot, not as a plan for finishing one particular game's set on a schedule.
